Increase in take-up of gap year travel insurance

People utilising a gap year to go travelling are becoming more cautious, according to Direct Travel Insurance.

Direct Travel Insurance has seen backpacking policy sales surge by 25% over the 12 months ending July 2009, an indicator that despite the recession and tightening purse strings the overlooking of travel insurance is becoming less common.

In the European area sales rose particularly sharply, up by 40%.

Jonathan Cooper, MD of Direct Travel Insurance, is naturally pleased with the increase in policy sales.

Cooper has described the experience of a gap year as potentially very rewarding, but at the same time open to risks such as medical issues and stolen property which can be safeguarded against via insurance.

Direct Travel Insurance Backpacker cover allows policyholders to take out cheap European health insurance and still be covered for up to a fortnight’s travel in the US and Canada.

In addition, more than 100 sporting and other activities are covered as standard and the policy can be extended if the policyholder wants to spend more time travelling.
