Aggies
COLLEGE STATION — Mike Sherman pulled his best Dana X. Bible impression this week, when Sherman said that he plans to take four Texas A&M students along for the ride when the Aggies take on Arkansas in Arlington.
"They'll be standing, waiting on the sideline and wearing their 12th Man jerseys," Sherman said. "Hopefully they won't have to go into the game."
It was back in 1922 on another trip to the Metroplex -- probably wasn't dubbed that then -- that Bible called on student E. King Gill out of the stands during the Dixie Classic against Centre College. Gill stood ready on the sidelines, wearing an injured player's uniform, and since then A&M students have stood in the stands. Ready if called upon.
"We have the best student body in the country, and I appreciate its support this season and last," Sherman said. "This is an opportunity for us to reach out to them and tell them how important they are to us -- and give them an experience that they normally wouldn't have."
The school will hold a yell practice at 6 p.m. Thursday, which the team will attend, and the first 20,000 students will receive a numbered ticket. A raffle will be held and four students -- one from each class -- will travel with the team to Arlington on Friday.
The students will attend practice at Cowboys Stadium, stay at the team hotel and then be on the sidelines for the 6:30 p.m. Saturday night game.
Oh -- one last thing -- bring your student ID to the yell practice if you plan on winning one of the four spots.
Old codgers (like me) need not apply. Unless, of course, you're a current student.
Arlington Forecast
The early forecast for Arlington on Saturday calls for a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day and a 30 percent that night, according to the National Weather Service.
All Aggie Hullabaloo
On Friday night the North Lawn at Rangers Ballpark will host the All Aggie Hullabaloo and Yell Practice. Aggies Max Stalling and Roger Creager will perform from 8-11 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Yell practice afterward, of course, is free.
